KNOW YOUR MEAT MATH?

MOTHER NATURE MATCHED THE NUTRIENTS IN WHOLE GAME, FISH OR FOWL TO PERFECTLY MEET THE NEEDS OF YOUR CAT.

IT’S ALL ABOUT THE MEAT!

Modern cats are built like their ancestors and we believe they should eat like them too. How do you know if your cat’s food is Biologically Appropriate? Simple – just answer our ‘three meat questions’.

  • HOW MUCH MEAT?

Entirely free of plant protein concentrates, ACANA Appalachian Ranch is loaded with 75% meat ingredients — more than twice as much as most pet specialty cat foods. Plus, all our meat and fish are sourced from federally inspected facilities.

  • HOW MUCH FRESH MEAT?

Half of the meat ingredients in ACANA Appalachian Ranch are FRESH or RAW, supplying essential nutrients in their most nourishing form. Fresh means never frozen, so refrigeration is the only way we preserve our fresh meats. The other half is dried or oils to provide a strong and natural source of richly nourishing animal protein and fat.

  • HOW MANY MEATS?

ACANA Appalachian Ranch features 5 fresh meats in WholePrey ratios that include meat, organs and cartilage to supply nutrients naturally and completely.

    • Angus beef – meat, liver, tripe, kidney and cartilage, fresh from Appalachian ranches.
    • Yorkshire pork – meat, liver, tripe, kidney and cartilage, fresh from Kentucky farms.
    • Suffolk lamb – meat, liver, tripe, fresh from Kentucky farms.
    • American bison – meat, fresh from Appalachian ranches.
    • Blue catfish – whole and fresh from Kentucky lakes.

LIMITED SUPPLEMENTS ADDED

In Mother Nature’s kitchen there are no synthetic supplements, and wildcats derive all of their nutritional needs by consuming whole prey animals. Muscle meat provides protein; liver, kidney and tripe supply vitamins and minerals; while bones and cartilage deliver calcium and phosphorus.

ACANA WholePrey foods incorporate meats, organs and cartilage in ratios that mirror Mother Nature, delivering nutrients naturally. So you won’t find long lists of synthetic supplements — only choline, zinc and copper are added.

FOOD FOR CARNIVORES

Your cat is an obligate carnivore and shares her anatomy with the Near Eastern wildcat – which means her body, teeth and jaws, and short digestive tract is designed for a diet rich in meat, protein, and fat.

Based on this biological fact, and to produce a nutritional analysis that mirrors the diet Mother Nature would provide for your cat, ACANA Appalachian Ranch is rich in nourishing proteins and oils from meat, all the while excluding rice, potato and tapioca and long lists of synthetic additives found in some cat foods.

YOUR CAT IS SPECIAL

Just like you, your cat or kitten is a unique individual and her feeding requirements will vary with breed, environment, age and activity.

That’s why we suggest using this chart as a starting point, and monitoring your cat or kitten’s weight and adjusting amounts as needed. We also recommend feeding her twice daily and always keeping fresh, clean water available.

When switching diets, it’s important to transition your cat or kitten as it takes time for her digestive system to adapt to the richer nutrient levels in ACANA. Over a 5-7 day period, gradually mix in ACANA, increasing the amount each day so that by day 7 you are feeding 100% ACANA.

† Use a standard 8-ounce measuring cup. Serve dry or lightly moistened. See your veterinarian regularly. To help maintain freshness, we recommend sealing the bag tightly and storing it in a cool, dry location.

ACANA Appalachian Ranch is formulated to meet the nutritional levels established by the AAFCO Cat Food Nutrient Profiles for All Life Stages.

CALORIE DISTRIBUTION

Compared to some cat foods, ACANA delivers more calories from protein and fat and fewer calories from carbohydrates, promoting your cat’s peak health.

Metabolizable Energy is 3980 kcal/kg (454 kcal per 8 oz. cup), with 34 % from protein, 24 % from fruits and vegetables, and 42 % from fat.

BIOLOGICALLY APPROPRIATE

MEAT-BASED FOODS THAT MIRROR YOUR CAT’S EVOLUTIONARY DIET.

The Near Eastern wildcat is the closest relative of domestic cats. Despite years of breeding, the internal workings and eating anatomy of wild and domestic cats remain unchanged, so it’s no surprise that their food requirements remain the same too.

Our Biologically Appropriate principle is simple: mirror the quantity, freshness and variety of meats that nature evolved cats to eat, and exclude high-glycemic carbohydrates, vegetable proteins, synthetic additives and anything else that nature didn’t intend your cat to eat.

  • RICH IN MEAT (75%)

Cats are biologically adapted for a diet rich in meat. Your cat is anatomically designed to break down protein and fat from meat with her sharp teeth, single hinge jaw, and short digestive tract. That’s why we loaded ACANA Appalachian Ranch with 75% meat, including Angus beef, Yorkshire pork, Suffolk lamb and American bison, all sourced from regional farms.

  • HIGH FRESH MEAT INCLUSIONS (1/2)

Half of the meat ingredients in ACANA Appalachian Ranch are authentically FRESH or RAW and delivered to our kitchens, so they are loaded with goodness and taste. Refrigeration is the only way we preserve our fresh meats – our fresh meat is never frozen. Our raw meats are flash-frozen at their source to lock in natural goodness. The other 1/2 of meat ingredients are dried or oils to provide a strong, natural source of animal protein and fat.

  • A VARIETY OF WHOLE MEATS (5)

In nature, your cat’s diet would include an assortment of whole prey animals that provide all the essential amino acids, vitamins and minerals needed for peak health. ACANA Appalachian Ranch features a diversity of fresh meats in richly nourishing WholePrey ratios of meat, organs and cartilage to mimic your cat’s natural diet and nourish her naturally. So you won’t find long lists of synthetic supplements – only choline, zinc and copper are added.

  • RICH IN MEAT PROTEIN (35%)

ACANA is entirely free of pea or potato protein concentrates commonly used in today’s cat foods. ACANA Appalachian Ranch derives its rich protein content from premium animal ingredients (not plants) that support lean muscle mass and a healthy body weight and nourish your cat according to her evolutionary needs.

  • CARBOHYDRATE LIMITED (25%)

Your cat’s natural diet contains almost no carbohydrate at all. That’s why ACANA features fruits and vegetables in limited quantities—meaning no extra non-essential carbohydrate to be stored as body fat.

This helps maintain healthy blood sugar levels, reduces the potential for fat storage, and promotes overall good health.

At Champion Petfoods, our vision is to be trusted by Pet Lovers everywhere, and that means producing dog and cat foods and treats of exceptional quality. Whenever we enhance our diets we use our Biologically Appropriate mandate to guide us. Recent enhancements to our ACANA Singles foods included an increase in meat content from 50% to 60%. While an increase in meat is usually a good thing, trying to balance the nutrients in a food that relies on one animal source can be challenging. After adding more fish to our ACANA Singles Wild Mackerel food, we were not satisfied with the new vitamin and mineral balance in the enhanced food. Rather than keeping one ACANA Singles food at 50% and moving the other foods to 60%, we’ve decided to discontinue ACANA Singles Wild Mackerel effective immediately.
