Half of the meat, fish, poultry, and eggs that go into ACANA are fresh or raw, in their most nourishing form, providing the flavors and richly nourishing goodness that dogs and cats instinctively crave.
Our fresh meats are loaded with protein, fat, vitamins, and minerals in their natural form. To preserve their integrity, we gently steam-cook ACANA at low temperatures (90C/195F) in our state-of-the-art, purpose-built Kentucky DogStar Kitchen.
Fresh, raw, or dried, all ACANA meat ingredients are sourced from federally inspected facilities– a rarity among pet food makers.
HOW IS THIS DIFFERENT?
What North American pet food makers describe as a fresh or raw meat is usually dried meat that they reconstitute by adding four parts water to one part meat to produce a ‘meat slurry’.
Unfortunately, a ‘meat slurry’ meets the AAFCO labelling standard as ‘meat’, making it difficult for Pet Lovers to understand the difference between authentically fresh or raw meat, and reconstituted meat.

In our kitchen, refrigeration is the only means of preservation for our fresh meats, and our raw meats are flash-frozen at peak season to lock in their natural goodness.
