IT'S ALL ABOUT THE MEAT

MOTHER NATURE MATCHED THE NUTRIENTS IN WHOLE FOWL, FISH AND GAME TO PERFECTLY MEET THE NEEDS OF YOUR DOG.

Modern dogs are built like their ancestors and we believe they should eat like them too. In nature there are no food supplements, and dogs and wolves derive their nutritional needs by consuming whole prey animals; muscle meat provides protein; liver, kidney, and tripe supply vitamins and minerals; and bone and cartilage deliver calcium and phosphorus.

How do you know if your dog’s food is Biologically Appropriate? It’s simple, just answer the three meat questions.

  • HOW MUCH MEAT?

Entirely free of gluten, ACANA Prairie Poultry is loaded with 50% meat — up to twice as much as most pet specialty dog foods.
  • HOW MUCH FRESH MEAT?

1/3 of the meat in ACANA is FRESH, supplying essential nutrients in their most nourishing form, and 2/3 are dried to provide a rich source of meat protein.
  • HOW MANY MEATS?

ACANA Prairie Poultry features fresh meats in WholePrey ratios that include meat, organs, and cartilage or bone to supply nutrients naturally and completely.

    1. Free-run chicken – meat, liver, heart, kidney, and cartilage, fresh from farms and ranches.
    2. Free-run turkey – meat, liver, heart, kidney, and cartilage, fresh from farms and ranches.

DESIGNED FOR CARNIVORES

They might look different, but your dog shares his anatomy with the grey wolf, which means he’s evolved as a carnivore and adapted for a diet rich in meat, protein, and fat.

Based on this biological fact, and to produce a nutritional analysis that mirrors the diet Mother Nature would provide for your dog, ACANA features richly nourishing proteins and fats.

YOUR DOG IS SPECIAL

ACANA benefits dogs of all breeds. Just like you, your dog is unique with feeding requirements that vary with environment, age, and activity.

The table below provides a starting point, to be adjusted as needed to maintain optimum weight and peak conditioning. We suggest monitoring your dog’s weight and adjusting portions as needed. We recommend feeding twice daily and always keeping fresh, clean water available.

† Use a standard 250ml/120g measuring cup. Serve dry or lightly moistened. See your veterinarian regularly. To help maintain freshness, we recommend sealing the bag tightly and storing it in a cool, dry location.

CALORIE DISTRIBUTION

Unique compared to conventional foods, ACANA delivers more calories from protein and fat, and fewer calories from carbohydrates, reducing the risk of obesity and promoting your dog’s peak health.

Metabolizable Energy is 3493 kcal/kg (419 kcal per 250ml/120g cup), with 30% from protein, 30% from vegetables and fruits, and 40% from fat.

BIOLOGICALLY APPROPRIATE

MEAT-BASED FOODS THAT MIRROR YOUR DOG’S EVOLUTIONARY DIET.

The grey wolf is ancestor to all dogs. While years of breeding have produced hundreds of ‘different-looking wolves’, the internal workings of modern dogs and their wolf cousins remain unchanged. So, it’s no surprise their dietary needs remain the same too.

Our award-winning Biologically Appropriate philosophy is simple: mirror the quantity, freshness, and variety of meat that dogs are evolved to eat, while limiting the synthetic ingredients that don’t belong in a dog’s natural diet.

  • RICH IN MEAT (50%) AND PROTEIN (29%)

Your dog is biologically adapted for a diet rich in meat. That’s why we loaded ACANA Prairie Poultry with 50% meat, including free-run chicken and turkey, delivered fresh from regional farms.

Entirely free of the pea or potato protein concentrates common in today’s conventional dog foods, ACANA derives its rich protein content from premium animal ingredients, not plants, supporting lean muscle mass and nourishing your dog according to his evolutionary needs.

Compare to conventional dog foods which are typically low in meat protein and feature pea or potato protein concentrates.

  • HIGH FRESH MEAT INCLUSIONS (1/3)

We use fresh meat in its most natural and nourishing form. That’s why 1/3 of the meat in ACANA Prairie Poultry is fresh and 2/3 are dried, providing a concentrated, natural source of meat protein, supplying the essential nutrients and natural goodness that all dogs instinctively crave.

Compare to conventional dog foods which seldom contain authentically fresh meat.

  • AN ABUNDANT VARIETY OF MEAT (3)

Consider the variety in the natural diet: eggs today, a duck or goose tomorrow, fresh fish the next. Mother Nature provides a diversity of proteins and fats essential to the peak health of dogs.

Yet this variety is lost in conventional pet foods, which typically feature a single animal ingredient, such as chicken or lamb, that’s highly processed and rarely fresh.

That’s why ACANA features free-run chicken & turkey from prairie farms, providing a rich and nourishing diversity of meat proteins and fats to promote peak health.

Compare to conventional dog foods which feature one or two meats and have long lists of synthetic additives.

  • WHOLEPREY MEAT RATIOS

Mother Nature matched the nutrients in whole prey animals to perfectly meet your dog’s needs. Muscle meat provides protein and fat; organs supply vitamins and minerals; and cartilage or bone provide calcium and phosphorus.

ACANA features WholePrey ratios of meat, organs, and cartilage or bone that deliver nutrients naturally, in highly bio-available forms, all of which dramatically reduce the need to add synthetic vitamins or supplements to our foods.

Compare to conventional dog foods which supplement over 20 different amino acids, vitamins, and minerals

  • Your dog has no nutritional requirement for carbohydrates and his natural diet contains very few, if any, carbohydrates.

That’s why ACANA limits carbohydrate content and replaces fast carbohydrates such as rice, tapioca, and potato with steel-cut oats — a healthy option that enters the blood stream slowly, avoiding spikes in blood sugar, and decreases the potential for fat storage.

Compare to conventional dog foods which often exceed 50% carbohydrates, and feature high-glycemic ingredients such as rice, potato or tapioca.

At Champion Petfoods, our vision is to be trusted by Pet Lovers everywhere, and that means producing dog and cat foods and treats of exceptional quality. Whenever we enhance our diets we use our Biologically Appropriate mandate to guide us. Recent enhancements to our ACANA Singles foods included an increase in meat content from 50% to 60%. While an increase in meat is usually a good thing, trying to balance the nutrients in a food that relies on one animal source can be challenging. After adding more fish to our ACANA Singles Wild Mackerel food, we were not satisfied with the new vitamin and mineral balance in the enhanced food. Rather than keeping one ACANA Singles food at 50% and moving the other foods to 60%, we’ve decided to discontinue ACANA Singles Wild Mackerel effective immediately.
